This little dude is the quintessential cactus.
It has a number of deep-green 'blades', radiating from the centre of the plant, with delicate cream lines neatly dotted along the edges. Each of the dots has a bunch of spiky spines poking from them. As the name suggests, it flowers at night, when a single creamy-white bloom appears and wilts before dawn. After the flower fades the plant may develop a fruit, which is yellow-red on the outside and white inside. Known as the Peruvian apple, the seeds are edible.
You can move the pot outside in the summer, to add height to your garden. Just bring it indoors in the winter to protect him from the cold and frost.
As you might expect, this cactus needs tiny amounts of water. Let the soil dry completely before watering.
While it's young, keep in partial side. Once established, this guy can bask in the sunlight for hours. Place in the sunniest spot you can find.
This is a fast-growing cactus, so you may need to repot him every spring. In fact, he can grow up to 10m tall in the right conditions.
Conservatories and garden rooms are ideal for this sunloving cactus.
It's not known whether this plant is toxic or not. That said, the spikes can be pretty painful, so it's worth keeping it out of reach of both children and animals.
