When is a cactus not a cactus?
When it's an African Milk Tree - which isn't a tree either. Oh for goodness sake this is confusing. Anyway - this guys is a succulent shrub.
This is a Euphorbia Trigona Rubra Succulent, which is also known as an African Milk Tree.
Due to the white, milky sap it exudes. This sap is designed to repel sap-sucking insects and animal pests. It's like a built in security system.
These guys are a special milk tree and they have a red tint to their flesh. They also sometimes known as a Red Royal.
There's no special care required to keep them red, it is their natural tone.
Euphorbia Trigona like to dry out between waterings. You can put your finger (or you could use a pencil) about an inch into the soil, if it's damp, you can wait on watering; if it's dry, you know it's time to water again. It will need to be repotted every 2 to 3 years or so.
