Although we think these lithops look like sweets, the botanists who discovered them thought they looked more like coloured pebbles – hence the name 'Living Stones'. They come in a rainbow of colours, from lime greens and yellows to pinks and browns. It can be hard to see, but these plants are made up of two leaves joined at the base.
Every year the leaves wither and die, giving way to new growth.
They may start to produce small, white and yellow flowers between the two leaves when they reach maturity (around three years).
Their appearance seems to be a form of camouflage. In drought-stricken areas in their native southern Africa, they are difficult to distinguish them from the stones on the ground, so they're not eaten by animals searching for water.
Minimal watering is perfect. They like arid, desert conditions. Avoid watering when they lose their old leaves.
They like bright light to partial shade, mimicking their natural desert environment.
They're very slow growers. They'll be happy in nursery pots for a while to come.
They'll be at home in bright, warm rooms, like conservatories and orangeries.
They are child and animal friendly.
