These little Calatheas are adorable!
They all have highly patterned foliage, making them each a completely striking houseplant.
This Calathea 'Beauty Star' is a cultivated plant. This means it is combination of two or more plants, which have been selected for desirable characteristics and they've been smooshed together during propagation to make a whole new plant. It's something commonly seen with roses.
It has dark green leaves with lighter green lines in the centre, and thin silver and pink stripes. The underside of the leaves are dark purple. Standard for calathea.
Here's a fun plant fact for you… Calatheas symbolise new beginnings. This meaning comes from the saying to ‘turn over a new leaf’, which is what the plant does when closing up at night and opening again in the morning.
Calathea are great at removing a whole host of toxins from the air in your home and office.
To keep your plant looking healthy it's best to use distilled water. Rain water or water from your tumble drier will be fine. Keep the soil moist but not water logged, recommended watering pattern is once a week.
Calathea plants need bright, but not direct, sunlight to grow. Too much sunlight can burn their leaves.
Like a lot of low light plants, Calathea tend to grow fairly slowly. They don't tend to grow much taller than 2 feet.
It's a great small houseplant for bathrooms and kitchens. It likes high humidity, so can be placed in other rooms but you may want to consider a humidifier.
